RARRRRRR!

I hate money. In order to get paid for being a lab assistant I now had to go to the office of student employment WHERE ALL THEY DID WAS GIVE ME A PIECE OF PAPER THAT HAS TO BE FILLED OUT BY MY SUPERVISOR BUT I DONT KNOW WHO MY SUPERVISOR IS BECAUSE IT IS NOT THE SAME AS THE PEOPLE IN CHARGE OF THE LAB SO IM RUNNING ALL OVER CAMPUS.

Pull your heads out of your asses. Or put them back in.

It was so much simpler when I just got paid without any knowledge of who was paying me other than the entity known as NYIT.

I wouldn't be here right now waiting for a key person to return from another county to fill out my paper work if I had a real job that paid actual moeny so SOMEBODY GIVE ME A JOB SO I DONT HAVE TO DEAL WITH THIS STUPID CRAP.

I quit

Solar Decathlon dreams

I had 2 dreams about the Solar Decathlon last night. The first one was that we left two huge sections of the house in New York. In the other one, we were down in Washington and there were all these people protesting, so I started carrying a placard that directed people to our house. Our house also seemed to be set up in a remote area, away from the crowds and other houses. Then, for no apparent reason, we saw Paul Schaffer and he knew me. I haven't even watched Letterman in about two years.

Solar Decathlon is moving and shaking

No one ever calls me when cool stuff is happening, but I guess that's not really anyone's job. I got to school today with some time before class and went to the Solar Decathlon site. They had taken the house apart and just about finished loading it on to the trucks. Ellen and I are going down to Washington on the 8th to see the house and coming back the 9th.

Our rennovated website: http://iris.nyit.edu/solardecathlon/

I took probably a couple of thousand pictures realated to the solar decathlon. There are a few on the website.

There are also pictures in my flickr stream. Click the image bellow.

The AND animation

This is finished as far as I'm concerned.

{click here}

It might take a few moments to load but it should play automatically when it does. Ignore the crappy quality, that was the only way to get a widely compatible file that is that long and still be under 15 MB.

It will be shown on Symbol handheld barcode scanners (like PDAs with barcode scanners), SONY location free TVs (I want one!), a website and possibly elsewhere like in a documentary.

I hate

this semester. They are offering a lot of undergraduate courses on the graduate level. I tought I was done with those.

I have to go read a textbook now that, I'm told, makes no sense. Ellen emailed the professor about it but he was less than helpful. Now we can blame him.

Broken Printer Update

I'm officially giving up on the EPSON CX5400 (as a printer, anyway). Total money wasted trying to fix it: $30 - $50

Sorry, Ellen. You might have to buy a printer after all.

When'n and if'n I have time, I hope to turn the CX into a pinhole camera. This might require the use of a laptop.

Is it really this simple?

Tutorial for modeling a 3D portrait from photographs.

I guess I'll try it out with the reference material that Spike gave me. When I have time. Which could be soon as I signed up for 8 additional hours of working in the lab so I can get some more $$$. The room has no windows, but I shouldn't really complain because the job is easy and I get to do whatever I want unless someone needs help.

Another paying job falls trough

Turn's out I won't be freelancing at NSI. They didn't even contact me despite the fact that I could have under bid the other freelancer that will be in my place.

Instead I'm taking up residence in the lab from 12 to 5 on thursday {reminder to self: email Rob} and get paid by NYIT, the only actual work I seem to be able to get.

Broken Printer Update

The cleaning kit from fixyourownprinter.com arrived today. It consisted of a bottle of cleaning solution (billed as the same stuff used by Epson techs), a syringe (complete in sterile package) and a small (1 inch) bit of tube (the kind you find at pet stores for fish tank air lines). There were also directions. Which I sort-of followed. I'm sure that a fair amount of cleaning solution went where, maybe, it shouldn't have. I'm not super confident that this printer will ever print anything recognizable again. On the bright side, I didn't get any ink on me or my clothes.

Printer surgery 101

I reconnected the tube in my printer. The real question is, is it worth the $13 for a new cyan ink cartridge to see if it will actually print anything usable. It was kind of scary, taking it apart and putting it back, considering I had to disconnect and reconnect some kind of ground wire. But Dave assures me I won't die if I use it. Of course, I already have a new printer that's much nicer than this one.

I found out exactly what was wrong with my old printer and how to fix it myself. I can even see the tube that is disconnected without taking it apart. But, I think to actually reconnect it, some more parts have to come off.

I removed this brochure from my floor: http://www.full-circle-design.co.uk/

Particles!

Holy Hits!

In a matter of hours, the Roy Huxley images I posted on flickr got hundreds of views (probably due to Boing Boing). Previously my most viewed image on flickr was between 30 and 40, but my scan of the Stuart Light tank kit box has over 200 views.

I get on to Boing Boing!

Flooded

I had a dream last night that I woke up at home, and my mom asked me if I heard it rain last night. There was water coming up through the floor (I'm on the second story). I looked out side and there was water up to the top of the first story of all the houses. Everything was dried out by later in the dream. I hadn't even watched any of the news yesturday. Weird.

And Now For Something Completely Violent

firefly

These are scans of 1/76 scale Matchbox plastic model kits I had collected and assembled over years past. They didn't fit together as well as some other model brands, but I always liked them because they were out of production and hard to find. Revell of Germany now produces kits using the old Matchbox molds, but the packaging is not as charming and they have hard plastic tracks rather than the soft (and often brittle) rubber tracks that came with these kits. A good portion of the painted artworks on the front of the boxes are signed by a Mr. Roy Huxley. Tanks for the memories, Roy.

Go to my flickr stream for the complete collection. Although, my collection was never completed. I never found the Comet, among others.

Based on the wear and discoloration of the kit boxes I have, I think there were three "generations" of these kits branded as Matchbox and having this artwork. The earliest had a clear window on the back of the box. The next had no window, and the last seems to have rounded corners on the front artwork. The oldest ones are marked © 1973, the squared corner ones are © 1983 and others © 1986, while the rounded ones are © 1986.
Permalinked for my enjoyment.

Shorts: The Good, The Bad, and The Frayed

Low Quality Garment

These are U.S. Expedition shorts. I paid almost $30 (including shipping and such) on their site because I wanted shorts with zippered cargo pockets, like by beloved brown Wearfirst convertable cargo shorts/pants. The button on the crappy US Exp shorts came off the first time I wore them (are you saying I'm fat??)! They are also frayed and seem to be coming undone. I've only had them since late June. At most, they've been through the wash 5 times, though I think that number is conservatively high.

I don't like them so much.

A silver dollar goes to the first person that can point me towards a store that is confirmed as carrying Wearfirst clothing. Not that its rare, I'm just too lazy to go searching that hard.

UPDATE: I sent this message to US Expedition:

Hi, I purchased some USX shorts in late June. I must say I am not very impressed by the quality of the garment. Are they supposed to fall apart so fast? I expressed my grievances publicly on my blog:

Irish Joe, the T-Shirt

Fully realized in t-shirt form, I was trying out a new brand of heat transfers and trying to use up two ink cartridges that are low. It came out rather nice. Too bad I did it on a ratty old t-shirt. I'll have to have another one when St. Patrick's day rolls around. This is a prelude to my forthcoming Lobster Rodeo shirt.

Weekend at Burnie's

Well, Ellen's actually.

I went to Ellen's house on Friday and had dinner. Then we watched Young Frankenstein, the first half of The Fellowship of the Ring, and then fell asleep watching the other half.

On Saturday we went to Maureen's Kitchen for breakfast, which is always worth the wait. Then we watched several hours of helicopters rescuing people in New Orleans. We also went to the Byzantine Bazaar: Long Island Slavic Folk Festival, where I had funnel cake for the first time. Ellen got a little handmade wooden toy that, when you swirl it around in a circle, five or six chickens (and a rooster) peck their heads up and down. It's cooler than it sounds. We had dinner with friends of Ellen's family and went in their heated pool. I spilled half a glass of white zinfandel, narrowly missing their cordless phone. I tried muscles, which I wasn't too keen on, and ate two hotdogs drowned in horseradish mustard (aka mustard dogs).

Today, Ann Marie and Ray made Mickey Mouse waffles for breakfast. We were going to go canoeing but we found out the canoe ride out there takes over two hours, so we just went out on Ray's boat instead. Ellen got a little seasick, so Ray dropped us off to go home. As we were driving back, I saw a mobil station in East Northport that had gas for almost $10. It's about $3.50 or so elsewhere, so maybe that price was some kind of joke. I didn't get it.

And I had NO camera with me the whole weekend. Imagine that.

Anyhow, I'm back home now. I took all the icons on my desktop (except hard drives) and put them in a folder called Sort Me!!!! There are over 570 items in the folder, not including things that are inside folders that were on my desktop. I already got rid of about a gig of stuff.

UPDATE: my G4 is noticeably faster without all that junk on the desktop
