Do you blame cars for drunk drivers? (Gun control post)

That is what I was asked. Here is my response:

Nope. Cars are a necessary part of modern life. They are licensed and insured. The government, whose purpose in this country is to protect its people, knows exactly who has which car. You have to pass numerous tests to drive a car. Your privilege to drive a car can be taken away. Government data about cars is available for public study.
How about opioids and other controlled substances? Regulated by the government because they are a public health issue? Alcohol? Radioactive materials? Regulated because they can be dangerous. Can you buy a belt fed machine gun or hand grenades? Not easily because they are destructive devices that are a threat to the public. But what if I was a responsible hand grenade owner who promised to never to use them? Certainly that right is protected by the willful misinterpretation of the second amendment that is propped up by funding from the gun lobby.
When is enough enough? Do the United Kingdom and Japan have lower rates of homicide and suicide by gun violence because their populations have fewer mental health issues? I think not.
If the gun lobby stopped funding the campaigns of representatives and senators today there is no doubt in my mind there would be a swift change in the direction regarding legislation.
What exactly are you afraid of? I’m all ears.
