Announcing my Long Island History blog!

I have a new blog dedicated to Long Island History. I have been taking note from some out of print books I got from the library. I am mostly interested in the Colonial and Revolutionary periods.

Jarvis sighting

I have spotted another instance of Jarvis! Jarvis is the name of a fictional charcter and proclaimed mascot of American Science and Surplus. I have reason to believe he actually comes from clipart that is in the public domain. He is the image of a flying man with a rotor strapped to his back. AS&S was the first place I saw him. I have also seen him on a Trader Joe's shopping bag. Ever since I discovered that he was probably clipart, I have been searching for the image and its origins. Not much has turned up. I saw him today when someone (The Make blog I believe) posted a link to the Handcar Regatta, wherein the image of whom I call Jarvis appears in some flyers/posters and also next to their RSS feed icon (which is also really cool):

Here he is a bit larger:

If anyone can tell me the origin of this image or where else it might be found, they (perhaps you) would have my enduring gratitude!

Blogger + Yahoo = Me Crzay

I thought I would never be able to post through FTP again, but here is the fix:

1.Create a new FTP username and password (under small business home/"manage" tab/password manager)--then click link to grant access to whole site to new user.
2. In blogger's FTP settings in the FTP Username field, input new username (newusername @ yourwebsite.com--without those spaces of course) and new password.

Hilarious System 7 Simulator

While looking into emulating Mac OS 7 in OS X, I came across this hilarious flash-based simulation of a Performa 6116CD running OS 7.5. Its amazingly detailed. You can even empty the trash, open folders, run the screen saver and change the desktop image. [click here!]

Photography site updated

I have updated my photography site. No, there are not any new photos, but the gallery now incorporates fancy lightbox effects. Light boxes are getting to be common these days, there are tons of them freely available for use. I used shadow box, which is pretty nifty and easy to implement. The one thing that was not obvious was how to get one light box to go to another. I figured out that you have to out a gallery name in the rel attribute of each anchor you want to be in the sequence. For example:

<a href="someimage1.gif" rel="shadowbox[galleryname1]">Your link to image 1</ a>
<a href="someimage2.gif" rel="shadowbox[galleryname1]">Your link to image 2</ a>

If you wanted more than one sequence to live on the same page, you would just change galleryname1 to galleryname2 or butterflies or watertowers or what ever you wanted.

Just thought I'd share. I think I like shadowbox better than the boxover popups in my wedding gallery. I'll have to convert them :)

Yet another blog I've Started

I have another new blog called Wikipedia Daily, where me, my brother and our friend Neil post random things from Wikipedia that we think are interesting or funny. This is my first blog where people that I've invited actually sign up and collaborated!

Other blogs I maintain (other than this one):
The Pirate Shack, a blog about pirates.
Ellen & Scott, a wedding stuff blog.
Art Gallery, where I post public domain artwork.
Amok Literature, the short attention span reading room.
Scott's Video Blog, videos of all shapes and sizes.

Plus there are some other blogs in my blogger account that I don't use much.

E-waste is your problem too

Did you know that a 4 foot by 4 foot box of disposed and shredded circuit boards can be worth as much as $10,000? Did you know that Sweden and Denmark recycle over 100% of their glass consumption? Did you know that there is a huge illegal trade in shipping our e-waste to developing countries?
