Food Box: Go or No Go

Eatery Review: Azerbaijan Grill (aka Azerbaijan Restaurant & Grill).

Looks are deceiving, as this Azerbaijani restaurant looks like a small takeout place from the outside. It is, in fact, a nicely furnished eatery with friendly staff. I felt a bit underdressed in a t-shirt and jeans, but sallied fourth to dine nonetheless. The sign outside says mediterranean and food from the silk road. The menu does have many items that are similar to Greek food. To begin, we were brought complementary pita bread and a yogurt sauce. From there, we ordered an appetizer consisting of a sort of Azerbaijani cheese stick, made with feta and some kind of herb. These are good and come with a spicy green dipping sauce. For dinner, I had boneless chicken kebab. This was also very good. It was served with rice, grilled tomato, onion and broccoli, as well as a lemon. The staff is very attentive and was happy to explain a few of the finer points of Azerbaijani cuisine. Its easy to see why Azerbaijan Grill was named by Newsday as one of the top 10 new restaurants of 2005.
